Spectra from nuclear-excited plasmas

Journal Article · · J. Opt. Soc. Am.; (United States)
Spectra from /sup 3/He(n,p)/sup 3/H nuclear-induced plasmas generated under high thermal neutron flux, lasing conditions are presented for the first time. The spectra from mixtures of /sup 3/He and Ar, Xe, Kr, Ne, Cl/sub 2/, F/sub 2/, and N/sub 2/ indicate little difference between high-pressure nuclear-induced plasmas and high-pressure electrically pulsed afterglow plasmas for noble-gas systems. Excimer emission from XeF* and KrF* was observed under /sup 3/He nuclear excitation. Preliminary results on spectra from He and Ar plasmas excited by the /sup 235/UF/sub 6/(n,ff)FF reaction that show quenching of the atomic excited-state species by UF/sub 6/ are also reported.
