Amplification of long and short pulses in the medium of a DF--CO/sub 2/ chemical laser

An experimental comparison was made between the energy characteristics of the medium of a pulsed D/sub 2/--F/sub 2/--CO/sub 2/--O/sub 2/--He chemical laser under oscillation and amplification conditions. It was found that, under saturation conditions, the specific energy outputs of the amplifier and oscillator with pulse durations > or approx. =10/sup -6/ sec were almost the same. The time profile of the unsaturated gain was determined and the amplification of short (approx.150-2 nsec) pulses was investigated. The angular distribution of the radiation and the influence of the walls of the reaction vessel on this distribution were studied.
