Ventilated drum reduces dust 50%

Despite overall good compliance, some longwall mines continue to have dust control problems, The most successful efforts to reduce the dust have concentrated on improving ventilation, water spray techniques, and machine design and operating techniques. No single technique has been found that answers everyone's dust problem; all have limitations. Most of the dust generated during longwall mining comes from the cutting action of the shearer drums. Experience has shown that this dust is best controlled by capture or suppression at its source. The ventilated drum is designed to reduce the amount of dust from cutting by drawing dust laden air from the cutting zone through water-powered dust capture tubes built into the shell of the shearer drum. It is not retrofitted but integral with the drum, and is highly compatible with all other longwall dust control techniques.
