Rock mechanics implications of secondary recovery under highwalls

Eastern US coalfields have been extensively strip mined. In the past, contour mining left vast areas of post-mining highwalls and benches. Thin seams, which cannot be mined by conventional methods, often contain substantial reserves of high quality coal. Unconventional secondary recovery methods may permit economic production of that coal, and provide resources for restoration of mined land. Rock mechanics implications of secondary mining methods are discussed to determine their limitations.
