Large electricity consumers, utilities eye lead-acid batteries for customer-side load leveling

The first demonstrations of batteries for electric load leveling by large users of electricity will be in the near future, with the battery market potential likely to be in the same 30-GW range as for thermal storage. A sharp drop in the price of lead, chief cost component of the lead-acid battery, prompted the new interest. Utility demand charges dominate the economics for large customers, with $8 to $10 a point for exploring load leveling. Other factors would be the size of peak demand, daily load factor, short daily peaks, and energy costs. Both utilities and customers have some objections to the concept of a customer-side battery, and most utilities show little interest in utility ownership. Transit systems reported some problems with customer-side battery storage. 1 table.
