A cask for storage of nuclear fuel is described comprising: a container having a cavity therein, the cavity including a top portion, a bottom portion defining a floor, and a generally cylindrical side wall extending between the top and bottom portions, the side wall having annular regions with different inner diameters; and basket means for providing elongated storage slots to receive the nuclear fuel. The basket means include grid assemblies with circular peripheries and different diameters, and means for coaxially mounting the grid assemblies at spaced-apart positions so that the periphery of each grid assembly faces a respective annular region. The diameters of the grid assemblies and the inner diameters of the annular regions decrease from the top portion to the bottom portion of the container.
