Tacoma, Washington has a unique opportunity to exploit waste heat from a new secondary wastewater treatment facility to support a district heating and cooling system (DHC). A joint proposal by the city, port, and state energy office seeks DOE funding for a feasibility study. Some businesses can benefit by using the heat from a DHC system, others benefit by selling heat to it. The utility is pursuing a cogeneration project that would tie in with the system. Economic advantages for the city include employment, an inexpensive heat source to attract and retain business, local control over energy, reduced pollution, lower insurance, space savings, and increased efficiency.
