Direct coupling clutch control system for automatic transmission

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5461690
A direct coupling clutch control system is described for an automatic transmission including a torque converter having a pump impeller, a turbine runner and a stator. The control system consists of: a direct coupling clutch constructed between a housing of the torque converter and a clutch piston mounted integrally and rotatably with the turbine runner and slidably in its axial direction with respect to the housing, the clutch piston being adapted to frictionally engage with and disengage from the housing; a first fluid passage communicating with a first pressure chamber formed between the housing and the clutch piston when the clutch piston is frictionally engaged with the housing; a second fluid passage communicating with a second pressure chamber formed between the pump impeller, affixed to the housing, and the clutch piston; a gap formed between the housing and the circumference of the clutch piston and communicating the first pressure chamber with the second pressure chamber therethrough when the clutch piston is disengaged from the housing; means to continuously introduce a first pressurized fluid of pressure regulated by a hydraulic control circuit of the automatic transmission into the first pressure chamber through the first fluid passage; a third fluid passage to which a second pressurized fluid of a pressure greater than the pressure of the first pressurized fluid regulated by the hydraulic control circuit is introduced when the automatic transmission is shifted to a high speed range; a fourth fluid passage connecting the first fluid passage and a drain passage and including a resistance therein; and a switching valve including a cylindrical fluid chamber.
