Geothermal energy activities at the New Mexico Energy Institute

The geothermal energy activities at the New Mexico Energy Institute (NMEI) at New Mexico State University (NMSU) in Las Cruces, NM are discussed. They include: (1) administering the New Mexico Alternate Energy Research and Development Program in geothermal energy; (2) conducting geothermal energy research under two US DOE-sponsored programs to locate and assess geothermal energy resources and to assist the initiation of geothermal commercialization activities; and (3) housing the state geothermal commercialization team. The State of New Mexico has funded 47 research and development projects. State-funded geothermal demonstration projects are supervised by the state commercialization team at NMEI-NMSU. Six projects have been funded with a $200,000 appropriation. Additional projects will be supported from a supplemental appropriation of $600,000. The Regional Operations Research Program has developed a comprehensive data base of geothermal resources, interfaced with demographic information on commercial, residential, and industrial energy users.
