Logistics and economics of biomass utilization

Conference · · ASAE Tech. Pap.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5460346
Technical and economic comparisons were made of systems for collecting, processing, storing, and transporting biomass for use in energy systems. Types of biomass considered include field crop residues, orchard prunings, and forest slash. Optimum systems can be selected based on the least cost of delivering a given quantity of biomass to a specific site. Costs of producing electricity, medium-energy gas (MEG or Syngas), and synthetic natural gas (SNG) from biomass were also computed using a regulated utility approach. For a biomass fuel cost ranging from $0 - 55/t, electricity costs are $0.05 - 0.10/kWh, MEG costs are $2.85 - 7.50/GJ, and SNG costs are $5.00 - 12.30/GJ in 1982 constant dollars.
