Jet-mass spectra in perturbative quantum chromodynamics

Invariant-mass spectra of jets are computed for the processes e/sup +/e/sup -/ ..-->.. qq-barg and e/sup +/e/sup -/ ..-->.. /sup 3/S/sub 1/ ..-->.. 3g in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The distributions exhibit a scaling in M/sup 2//s apart from logarithmic violations. At energies near 30 GeV our first-order QCD calculation should be reliable for M/sup 2//s>0.1. The M/sup 2/ spectra are shown to be very sensitive to heavy flavor thresholds. Possible effects of higher-order QCD and nonperturbative smearing are discussed.
