As part of the USNRC efforts to understand Japanese earthquake engineering practice, a voluminous publication by the Japan Electric Association entitled JEAG 4601-1987, {open_quotes}Technical Guidelines for Aseismic Design of Nuclear Power Plants,{close_quotes} was translated and recently published as NUREG/CR-6241. The guidelines provide a detailed description of the current Japanese seismic design methods, and can be considered to be a key document in understanding the seismic design criteria and practice for Japanese nuclear power plants.
