Modifying an ac device for dc use is an economical way to create the circuit breakers needed for high-voltage dc lines. Preliminary work has achieved a puffer design that can interrupt 2200 amperes at 500 kV. The plan now is to develop a full-scale prototype for field tests and eventual utility use.
