In nature, neptunium is present with uranium in amounts of about 1.8 . 10/sup -10/%. We know of about 13 isotopes of neptunium, the longest lived one being /sup 237/Np (T/sub 1/2/ = 2 . 10/sup 6/ years); it is an ..cap alpha..-emitter, with particle energy of 4.77 MeV. Activity per 1.5 mg /sup 237/Np constitutes 1 ..mu..Ci. With respect to its chemical properties neptunium, like uranium, is referable to the sixth group of the Mendeleev periodic table. More recently, this element is being used extensively in science and technology and in personal dosimetry. The biological effects of neptunium have been little-studied. The objective here was to investigate the long-term effects of neptunium-237.
