The practical application of probabilistic risk assessment: Utility experience and NRC perspectives: Final report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5456602
Ten United States utilities that have undertaken significant PRA activities were interviewed to evaluate their experiences in the development and application of PRA. The extent to which these utilities used their PRAs to address design, operation, or regulatory issues is summarized and the actual benefits received by the utilities are delineated. Program characteristics that enhanced or hindered success are identified. In addition, 15 NRC personnel were interviewed who have been involved in or who are currently responsible for regulatory actions and decisions that could be affected by PRA. The perspectives of these influential regulators on the success, failure, and potential value of PRA are summarized. The resultant information base is designed to provide practical and realistic guidance to utilities contemplating or planning PRA development or application programs.
