Al-Mg alloys, as a lightweight auto-body material, have been subjected to intensive investigation. However, research on solidification behavior is limited. The binary Al-Mg alloy is a relatively simple alloy system. Its solidification processing is not complicated. But, the Al-Mg alloy equilibrium diagram shows that the eutectic temperature is very low. During solidification, elemental segregation will give rise to formation of a low melting point eutectic (LMPE). These LMPEs increase the difficulty in heat treatment processing, such as homogenization and annealing. High temperatures will lead to overheat and the LMPE remelting, while low temperatures will result in imperfect dissolution of the LMPE. All these factors give rise to reduction of mechanical properties. On the other hand, the addition of alloying elements and the presence of impure elements would make the solidification processing more complex. Some new LMPEs or insoluble constituents may be formed. But, these questions are far from being understood. It is the purpose of this study to investigate the solidification behavior and microstructure of Al-Mg alloys with the addition of Cu.
