A recent study compared the serum Cr levels of a selected group of men exposed to Cr in 4 S. Ontario tanneries with those of controls not exposed to Cr in the workplace. Subjects were matched for age, race and socioeconomic status. Siliconized needles and Cr-free syringes were used to obtain fasted blood samples from 75 tannery workers (anti x = 37 yrs, range 17-64) and from 55 controls (anti x = 40 yrs, range 19-63). Serum was analyzed under clean room conditions at the Vitamin and Mineral Laboratory, USDA Beltsville, MD. Following lyophilizaton and dry ashing, serum Cr was determined by flameless atomic absorption. Serum Cr levels for tannery workers (median 0.51 ng/ml, range 0.37-0.81) were significantly higher (p = .0001) than for controls (median 0.15 ng/ml, range 0.12-0.20). For controls, serum Cr was correlated with age but not with height or weight. Serum Cr was not correlated with age, height, or weight for tannery workers. These data indicate that serum Cr levels may be an index of Cr status of men employed in the leather tanning industry.
