Myth of US deindustrialization

Journal Article · · Challenge; (United States)
OSTI ID:5455447
The author cites domestic slack demand and inflated finances as being the cause of America's supposed problems in the industrial world. He discounts the idea that international competition is the reason and explains why deindustrialization is not occurring contrary to popular belief. He feels it is unfair to make international comparisons of industrial performance based only on the current era and proves his point by citing relevant statistics on employment, research and development, capital formation, and productivity since 1973. The shifts in the US industrial sector are compared to those in Europe and Japan. The strengths as well as the weaknesses of the US industrial system are emphasized. 1 figure, 4 tables.
