The response of interwell tracer tests in watered-out reservoirs

The response of a tracer pulse test can be obtained from the results of a unit-mobility-ratio and equal-density miscible displacement. The tracer recovery response is identical with the production rate of the displacing phase in the miscible displacement. The tracer production rate follows from differentiation of the production rate of the displacing phase. Longitudinal mixing has a negligible effect on tracer responses of interwell tracer tests. Transversal mixing is important in layered reservoirs if the individual layers are thin (cm-dm scale). The tracer production-rate response of a production well to injection of a tracer pulse into an injector is 'slide-shaped': a sudden rise followed by a fairly extensive fall-off period. The more linear the flow pattern between injector and producer, the shorter is this fall-off period. In stratified reservoirs each layer produces its own 'slide' response. The responses of the less prolific layers, however, may be completely swamped by the responses of the more prolific layers. Single and multi-colour tracer tests can be accurately simulated with a black-oil reservoir simulator, provided a sufficiently fine grid is employed.
