Representing LDCs and residential consumers
- Columbia Gas Distribution Companies, Columbus, OH (United States)
Under FERC Order 636, supply diversification opportunities for LDC's will certainly be fostered. Potential suppliers are multiplied by each new route to the gas fields. The Columbia Distribution Companies welcome the opportunity presented by pipeline restructuring to gain greater control over the gas supply. The potential exists for the skilled [open quotes]players[close quotes] in this game to achieve commodity cost savings and Columbia wants to be one of those skilled players. The Columbia Gas Distribution Companies can provide a unique perspective to the industry because of its diversity of service area and because it is regulated by five different public utility commissions. Both small and large distribution companies are managed by CDC. Columbia, like many LDC's, now acquires gas primarily for resale to heat sensitive residential and commercial class customers. Consequently, the company must be concerned not only with the impact on the sales market but also the transportation market. Whatever the outcome of the restructuring, the company wants to be in a position to provide a least cost reliable sales service as well as to provide a competitive transportation service. Some of the significant concerns at the company are addressed.
