Estimated oil and gas reserves

Book ·
OSTI ID:5451864
Remaining recoverable reserves of oil and gas in the Gulf of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) have been estimated to be 3.50 billion barrels of oil and 42.4 trillion cubic feet of gas, as of December 31, 1987. These reserves are recoverable from 666 studied fields located in Federal waters. For any field contained partly in State waters and partly in Federal waters, reserves are estimated for the Federal portion only. An additional 84 fields, discovered since December 31, 1985, have not sufficiently developed to permit a reasonably accurate estimate of reserves. Original recoverable reserves are estimated to have been 10.76 billion barrels of oil and 122.1 trillion cubic feet of gas from 704 fields in the same geographic area. Included in this number are 38 fields that are depleted and abandoned; not included are the 84 insufficiently developed fields. Estimates were made for individual reservoirs based on geologic mapping and reserve evaluation of 495 fields. Engineering studies were conducted for another 209 fields.
