Development of highly corrosion-resistant tinplate with nickel-diffusion treatment in a continuous annealing process

A new type of nickel-diffusion pre-treatment in a continuous annealing line for highly corrosion-resistant tinplate was developed. Steel sheets are thinly nickel-plated (nickel coating weight 0.07g/m{sup 2}) in a continuous annealing line, subsequently annealed with a conventional heating cycle (at 700 C for 20 sec.) and then tinplated. Nickel content after annealing is about 20wt% at the surface and the diffusion depth is a few thousands {angstrom}. One of the reasons why the nickel-diffusion treated tinplate shows good corrosion resistance is that the corrosion potential difference, {triangle}E, between the base steel and tin deposit decreases due to the formation of the Fe-Ni alloy layer. {triangle}E of the nickel-diffusion treated base steel is about 10mV, though {triangle}E of the conventional base steel is as high as 130mV. For welded can, a new lightly tin-coated steel was developed by using this method with Sn less than lg/m{sup 2}.
