The microstructures of hypereutectic A1-Mn alloys rapidly solidified via laser surface melting and melt-spun ribbon techniques have been characterized using analytical transmission electron microscopy. The response of the as-solidified microstructure to subsequent heat treatment has also been investigated. At high Mn concentration, the rapidly solidified microstructure contains a complex second phase which exhibits icosahedral symmetry in electron diffraction patterns. Computer simulations of diffraction data have been produced using a multiple twinning model.
