Method and apparatus for locking the frequency and phase of a local oscillator

This patent describes a method for phase locking an output of a local oscillator with an external signal, the output produced from amplitude, frequency and phase parameters. It comprises the steps of: applying the local oscillator output signal to the external signal to produce a feedback error control signal; adjusting the amplitude, frequency and phase parameters based on the feed back error control signal; producing a modified local oscillator output signal from the adjusted amplitude, frequency and phase parameters; repeating the steps of applying local oscillator output signal to the external signal to produce a modified feedback error control signal, adjusting the amplitude, frequency and phase parameters based on the modified feedback error control signal, and producing a next modified local oscillator output signal from the adjusted amplitude, frequency and phase parameters until the next modified local oscillator output signal is phased locked with the external signal; providing a first pair of components of local oscillator output signal; and summing the pair of components to produce the output signal from the local oscillator.
