Formation of platinum aluminide coatings on IN738

The incorporation of a noble metal such as platinum into the oxidation resistant aluminide coating formed on nickel based superalloy has been reported to improve the corrosion resistance. The coatings formed in this work showed that different microstructures can be produced depending on the thickness of the platinum plate and the temperature and time of aluminizing. Three main types of platinum-aluminide coating can be distinguished. One is characterized by an outer layer of Pt{sub 2}Al{sub 3}. The second type is characterized by a marked interaction with the substrate. An outer layer of PtAl{sub 2} is followed by a layer of NiAl. The third type is characterized by a duplex layer of PtAl{sub 2} and NiAl and is obtained by a post-platinizing heat treatment process prior to aluminizing. Further heat treatment of all types of coating at 1000C has shown the development of different microstructures leading to a (PtNi)Al outer layer and widmanstatten sigma phase plates extending into the substrate.
