The effect of lattice parameter mismatch {Delta} on the coarsening kinetics at 425 C of cubic (Ll{sub 2})Al{sub 3}Zr and Al{sub 3}(V{sub 0.875}Zr{sub 0.125}) has been studied. Good lattice matching between an intermetallic compound and matrix is necessary to promote a low interfacial energy and thus resistance to particle coarsening at elevated temperatures. For the Al{sub 3}Zr phase, electron diffraction analysis has determined a {Delta} of 1.0% as compared to -0.3% determined for the Al{sub 3}(V{sub 0.875}Zr{sub 0.125}), Ll{sub 2}-type phase. At low volume fractions, an interfacial energy, {sigma}, of 4 {times} 10{sup {minus}2} J/m{sup 2} was calculated for the Al{sub 3}Zr phase from coarsening kinetics. The value for Al{sub 3}(V{sub 0.875}Zr{sub 0.125}) is even lower. Both {Delta} and {sigma} are suggestive of a semicoherent interface. Quantitative analysis of the kinetics is presented.
