Beta brass is extremely susceptible to stress corrosion cracking in aqueous environments. Depending upon the mechanical and electrochemical conditions, cracking follows wither an intergranular or transgranular path. The effects of the local stress and chemical environment on cracking susceptibility are described and discussed.
