The agency has denied requests by four foreign automobile manufacturers for a two-year delay in meeting the 1981-82 automobile emission standard for CCO: Fugi Industries (Subaru) for its 97 and 109 cu in. displacement (CID) engine; Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. (Datsun) for its 75, 85/91, 119, 146/168 CID engines and its EF-A and EF-B engines; Renault for its 85 CID engine; and Toyo Kogyo Co. Ltd. (Mazda) for its 70 CID engine. The EPA has granted a waiver of the 1981 standard for one year to Mazda 91 and 120 CID engines. The current CO standard is 7 g/mi and the 1981 standard will go to 3.4 g/mi. The reasons given by D.M. Costle (EPA) for denying or granting the requests for waiver are given.
