In 1989, growing concern for the environment led Great Britain's Rolls-Royce to extend its existing environmental protection techniques of steam/water injection into its gas turbines. This involved the development of a new type of combustion process for its Industrial RB211 gas turbine. The solution being developed by the company, and described here, is aimed at simultaneous reduction of NO[sub x] and CO emissions by using an engine modification known as the dry low emissions (DLE) system. It has been designed to meet the tighter requirements imposed by worldwide environmental protection legislation, which continues to demand a reduction in the level of harmful emissions from gas turbines used for electric power generation.
