The Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. will burn waste tires and other waste materials in a new incinerator/boiler system that could save the Des Moines facility $1 million a year. The facility will cost $2.5 million to design and build, but fuel savings and avoided trash-disposal costs should limit the payback to 2.5 years. Capital for the investment will come from funds that would have gone to expand facilities until the recession reduced the demand for new tires. The system will burn a mixture of 75% wood and paper, 15% waste oil and grease products, and 10% scrap tires collected from local dealers. A secondary burning chamber will minimize exhaust emissions. The company will consider similar installations at its other plants if the pilot project is successful. (DCK)
