Process for treatment of hydrocarbons. [desulfurization]

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5446763
An improved method of desulfurizing light petroleum oil which contains non-heterocyclic and heterocyclic organic sulfur compounds comprises vaporizing the petroleum oil and contacting the vapors while at a temperature within the range from 600/sup 0/ to 800/sup 0/F with a catalyst of the clay type for a period of about 2 to 10 sec to convert the non-heterocyclic organic sulfur compounds into hydrogen sulfide but without any substantial conversion of the heterocyclic sulfur compounds and the hydrocarbon constituents of the vapors separating and removing the resultant hydrogen sulfide is separated and removed from the petroleum oil. The hydrogen sulfide-free petroleum oil is then subjected to thermal treatment at a temperature within the range of 800/sup 0/ to 1100/sup 0/F to decompose the heterocyclic sulfur compounds in the petroleum oil to hydrogen sulfide, and the hydrogen sulfide is finally removed from the treated oil.
