Comparison of the Fischer--Tropsch synthesis of hydrocarbons and the Haber synthesis of ammonia

Journal Article · · J. Catal.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5445901

The most effective catalysts in the Fischer-Tropsch and Haber syntheses are the group VIII metals. Evidence is cited on the basis of a literature review to show that the dissociative adsorption mechanism for both nitrogen and carbon monoxide is responsible for the activity of these metals and to explain the efficiency of various promoters and the poisoning effect of other species. The implications of this mechanism for the development of more active catalysts are indicated. (JSR)
