Optimal Modulation Controllers for multiarea ac/dc systems are designed by a recursive algorithm that determines the state weighting matrix Q of a linear quadratic performance criterion. The basic feature of the proposed method is the reduction of the number of iterations as well as minimization of the calculations involved. This method is applied for eigenvalue assignment of a three area ac/dc system. Nonlinear simulation results show that the proposed controllers result in significant improvement of the dynamic performance of the interconnected system.
