Linear theta pinch with a strong, fast-rising magnetic field

Experiments are reported on the heating of a dense plasma in a linear theta pinch with a strong (B/sub z/< or approx. =50kG), fast-rising (tau/sub f/approx. =0.3 ..mu..sec) magnetic field. Inductive energy storage is used; the current is switched to the solenoid by fast-acting foil current breakers. In experiments without preionization of the gas, a dense n/sub e/approx. =4.10/sup 16/ cm/sup -3/), hot (T/sub e//sup +/T/sub i/>1 keV) plasma column is produced with a slight radial compression (eta=2--3). In experiments with preionization near the axis of the discharge chamber, a group of electrons with T/sub e/approx. =4--6 keV is observed.
