Title: Large momentum transfer proton-proton elastic scattering at 201 and 400 GeV/c

OSTI ID:5445547

Proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured for 4.9 < -t < 12.1 GeV/sup 2/ at 201 GeV/c and 5.4 < -t < 14.4 GeV/sup 2/ at 400 GeV/c. The experiment was performed with a hydrogen target and a double arm spectrometer located in the Proton West extracted proton beamline at Fermilab. At both 201 and 400 GeV/c, the observed cross sections decrease smoothly with /t/, showing no indication of the second dip predicted by some diffraction models. If the data are fit to an exponential of the form e/sup At/, the parameter A is found to decrease from 1.5 to 0.8 GeV/sup -2/ over our t-range, these values being substantially smaller than the diffraction model predictions for A approx. 5 to 6 GeV/sup -2/. At fixed t, the 201 GeV/c cross sections are larger by approx. 2.3 than those at 400 GeV/c. The energy dependence at fixed theta/sub cm/ (or fixed t/s) is consistent with the form s/sup -9/ /sup 6/, in approximate agreement with the s/sup -10/ prediction of some constituent models.
