A numerical study is carried out for the steady turbulent free convection in a two-dimensional open square cavity with and without surface radiation. The flow medium is air, and the used turbulence model is the Low-Reynolds-Number [kappa]-[epsilon] scheme taking into account the buoyancy and variable property effects. The velocity, temperature and turbulent kinetic energy fields, the averaged Nusselt numbers and the radiation portion in combined heat transfer at different overheat ratios and Raleigh numbers are presented and discussed to demonstrate the radiation effects on the turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics.
