Search for ductile ceramics
A processing method feature and resulting mechanical properties evaluation is made of nearly ductile, high toughness ceramics involving various reinforcements (whiskers, continuous fibers) to yield composites, and/or ceramic matrix microstructure refinement techniques such as chemical vapor infiltration and deposition, molecular-scale second-phase addition, sol-gel process matrix derivation, and sinter forging. The materials discussed encompass B/sub 4/C, SiC, Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/, carbon fiber-reinforced sol-gel glass composites, Al/sub 2/O/sub 3//TiC and ZrO/sub 2//Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ particulate/molecular composites, and carbothermally reduced ZrO/sub 2/; a comparative tabulation of tensile strength, toughness, hardness, and Young's modulus values is presented. 8 references.
