Gas gun consolidation of centrifugally atomized-type 304 SS powders

Conference · · TMS (The Metallurgical Society) Paper Selection; (USA)
OSTI ID:5443791
The consolidation of RSP Type 304 SS powders is being addressed using shock wave techniques. Controlled tests are underway using a gas gun for the powder consolidation. Pertinent test parameters include peak pressure, shock duration, and particle size distribution. The latter involves two near mono-sized fractions of 30 {plus minus} 10{mu}m and 75 {plus minus} 10{mu}m, in addition to the nominally as-processed particle size distribution. The die/target configurations utilize external lateral and longitudinal momentum traps. Critical to the study is the microstructural response, which is determined from detailed examinations of the precompacted powders and the recovered compacts. The microstructural assessments include DSC measurements and high resolution STEM examinations.
