Studies have been made to determine the microstructural effects of using Si or Zr as simple additions and as partial substitutes for Cr in Inconel 713LC. Initially, 0.5wt.% and 1.0wt.% Si or Zr were added to 713LC to determine the effect of these elements on the resulting microstructures in both conventionally cast material and melt spun ribbon. Secondly, the Cr was reduced by 50% (to 6wt.%) and the same studies were repeated. Microstructural analysis was performed using light optical and analytical electron microscopy. In both sets of alloys the Si and Zr additions caused an increase in the amount of eutectic nodules as well as the formation of an additional phase. Presently, consolidation studies are being done on ribbon which has been reduced to particulate. Similar studies are being conducted on Waspaloy.
