DSC was used to study the sequence and rate of formation of metastable, age-hardening precipitates in several 6061 aluminum alloy materials. The materials included extrusions produced by traditional ingot metallurgy practice, extrusions produced by a powder metallurgy (PM) process and PM extrusions that contained 20% SiC whiskers. All of these materials had the same nominal chemical composition, but precipitation of the metastable phases was different in the different materials. Reaction kinetics were also significantly affected. The role of the inert SiC whiskers and other microstructural constituents are discussed relative to these observations.
