Dual phase Bauschinger test specimens produced by quenching 1018 steel have revealed two previously unreported effects. Firstly, a strength differential effect has been observed for unstrained material; compressive stresses are higher than tensile stresses for the same strain level. The differential is larger for rodform banded martensite than for equiaxed martensite. Secondly, the Bauschinger effect is larger, as measured by permanent softening, for material tested first in compression than for material given a tensile prestrain. These effects are explained in terms of the residual stresses developed in the ferrite during martensite formation.
