Electron microscope studies have been made of the nucleation and propagation of cracks in bcc metals during in situ tensile deformation at low temperatures. A low temperature tensile specimen stage capable of operating down to liquid nitrogen temperature has been built for this experiment. The temperature dependence of crack tip deformation and its relationship to the ductile-brittle transition have been studied by determining the distribution of dislocations ahead of propagating cracks. The observed slip systems have been analyzed in terms of the resolved shear stress modified by the presence of the crack. The results are compared with the data obtained from tensile tests performed on bulk specimens at low temperatures.
