Reflecting surface-melt furnace and utilization of the slag

On the subject of treating municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration residue, the following is examined--melting characteristics of bottom ash alone, a mixture of bottom ash with fly ash and a mixture of bottom ash and Incombustible Waste, using a reflective surface-melting furnace which burns kerosene. All three specimens are found meltable, and the fuel consumption rates are 282, 327 and 155 liters per ton, respectively. The mixture of bottom ash and Incombustible Waste shows fuel savings helped by the heat value coming from the residual combustibles within the Incombustible Waste. The slag-forming ratio is high with bottom ash alone at 88%, whereas the mixture with fly ash produces 86% and the mixture with Incombustible Waste shows 70%. In addition to the kerosene burner, gas burners are tested and three different types of burners are compared in order to develop a suitable one for surface melting. The results of the tests in making water-permeable bricks and flagstones are shown. No heavy-metal leaching from the slags is found.
