To form a resource recycling society and to extend the life of landfill sites, the melting process of municipal waste incinerator residue is estimated to be the best way of recycling products as resources. This paper presents a recent application of an arc melting system and utilization of its products. Five plants are now operating satisfactorily and two are under construction. Total capacity of these corresponds to the largest in the world. The slag and metal from these plants are under trial utilization. Pb and Zn recovery methods from the condensate have been developed. The arc melting process of fly ash mixed with bottom ash has been certified and the mechanical properties and chemical stability of fly ash mixed slag was found to be equivalent to bottom ash slag, both fulfilling the regulations.
