Companies need to commit to a systematized approach to environmental management in order to achieve acceptable environmental performance. At the forefront of this effort are environmental management system (EMS) standards such as ISO 14000. But ISO 14000 itself represents the beginning of a more fully realized management approach known as Strategic Environmental Management (SEM). Incorporating elements of EMS, SEM also includes leading-edge accounting indices such as full cost accounting, activity-based costing and other methods for identifying and effectively managing environmental costs.
