Measurement of the cross section sigma(anti-nu/sub. mu. /e. -->. anti-nu/sub. mu. /e) and the ratio sigma(nu/sub. mu. /e. -->. nu/sub. mu. /e)/sigma(anti-nu/sub. mu. /e. -->. anti-nu/sub. mu. /e) and a determination of the electroweak mixing parameter, sin/sup 2/theta/sub W/

A new measurement of the antineutrino-electron elastic scattering cross section, sigma(anti-nu/sub ..mu../e ..-->.. anti-nu/sub ..mu../e), is reported here. The experiment was performed in the BNL neutrino beam with a large, finely segmented target-detector. A signal of 55.1 +/- 9.5 events is observed which combined with an analysis of low Q/sup 2/ quasi-elastic anti-nu/sub ..mu../p ..-->.. ..mu.. + n events. The measured cross section is sigma(anti-nu/sub ..mu../e ..-->.. anti-nu/sub ..mu../e)/E/sub anti-nu/sub ..mu..// = 1.16 +/- 0.20(stat.) +/- 0.14(stat.), where E/sub anti-nu/sub ..mu..// is the incident neutrino energy. The ratio of the neutrino-electron elastic scattering cross section and the antineutrino-electron elastic scattering cross section was also measured. The neutrino-electron elastic scattering cross section was measured previously by the same experiment. From the ratio, the electroweak mixing parameter, sin/sup 2/theta/sub W/, was calculated to have a value of sin/sup 2/theta/sub W/ = 0.209 +/- 0.029(stat.) +/- 0.013(syst.). This result is consistent with the Standard Model of electroweak interactions.
