Photochemistry of O sub 3 /HN sub 3 mixtures

Gaseous mixtures of HN{sub 3} and O{sub 3} were photolyzed with the 249-nm output of a pulsed KrF laser. The photolysis produces O({sup 1}D) atoms, which react with HN{sub 3} to produce N{sub 3} radicals and with the N{sub 3} radicals to produce electronically excited NO(A{sup 2}{Sigma}{sup +}). Rate constants for these reactions were determined from comparison of the experimental NO A {yields} X emission time profiles with NO(A{sup 2}{Sigma}{sup +}) densities calculated from a kinetic model for the system. The rate constants for O({sup 1}D) + HN{sub 3} and O({sup 1}D) + N{sub 3} were determined to be (3.2 {plus minus} 1.0) {times} 10{sup {minus}10} cm{sup 3} s{sup {minus}1} and (1.0 {plus minus} 0.3) {times} 10{sup {minus}10} cm{sup 3} s{sup {minus}1}, respectively.
