New upper limit on the decay {eta}{r_arrow}e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}

We have searched for the rare decay of the {eta} meson {eta}{r_arrow}e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} using the CLEO II detector. The {eta}{close_quote}s were produced in e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} collisions with 10 GeV center-of-mass energy at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). We find with 90{percent} confidence the upper limit on the branching fraction B({eta}{r_arrow}e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}){lt}7.7{times}10{sup {minus}5}. The application of conventional elementary particle theory to this decay predicts a branching fraction of about 10{sup {minus}9}. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}
