The Sagebrush Rebellion concerns a proposal to transfer 175 million acres of Federally-owned wildlands to state governments, an idea with political appeal for many an opportunity to replace decades of conservation and wilderness planning with development and speculation. The project is seen as a way to grab public lands for private profit, its supporters largely drawn from the group which will gain either financially or politically. The movement grew out of government efforts to cut back on overgrazing on public lands and alert the public to the environmental impacts of grazing policies. Although legislative efforts have not succeeded, the movement has hindered the Bureau of Land Management and has championed private interests to the point where use violations and efforts to discredit government management are flagrant. A concerted lobbying effort is called for to prevent a massive land transfer. (DCK)
