Effect of air-borne oxidants on biological activity of indoleacetic acid

Ozone and peroxyacetyl nitrate inactivate the biological activity of indoleacetic acid in an irreversible manner. The relative inactivating power of the two substances is about the same. Ascorbic acid and reduced glutathione can prevent this inactivation by oxidants. The addition of ascorbic acid to ozone- or peroxyacetyl nitrate-treated indoleacetic acid did not restore the growth-promoting function. Ultraviolet spectra indicated that the indole ring had been altered by the ozone and by the PAN.
